Simulation Enhanced Training – Communicating with Patients

Denise MacIver

Denise MacIver. With Health Canada funding and the sponsorship of ACCC (Association of Canadian Community Colleges) a three- phase study was conducted at NAIT, the Michener Institute, and Mohawk-McMaster to answer the research question: Does simulation enhanced training reduce the time to competency for allied health science students? Patient communication competencies were selected for the study with student participants from ultrasound, medical radiological technology, magnetic resonance imaging, combined laboratory and x-ray technology, medical laboratory technology, and radiation therapy. The CSDMS presentation will highlight key points of the study, its conclusion and recommendations for further research. Included will be a DVD of scripted performances of the "dos and don'ts" of communicating with patients. (Note: Phase 1 of the study was published in the Journal of Allied Health, Spring 2010.)
