Sonography of Venous Outflow Obstruction
Karen Letourneau
Karen Letourneau.
Examination of the deep venous system for deep vein thrombosis is an examination performed daily in most ultrasound departments and is thought to be a rather simple test when it is negative. It can, however, lead to the discovery of a host of other diseases such as right-sided heart disease, pelvic masses, pelvic congestion syndrome, renal cell carcinoma, lymphoma, and pancreatic masses. Veins receive much less attention than arteries in the medical literature; however, an understanding of the physiology of veins will help both the novice and seasoned sonographers alike. Included in this lecture are some of the unexpected, incidental findings that began with a "simple" request to rule out a deep vein thrombosis.
