Understanding the Vertebral Artery; Steals and Beyond

Lori K. Arndt

Lori K. Arndt, The vertebral and/or subclavian steal syndrome and phenomenon are conditions that are seen with some regularity and are usually accepted as an incidental finding during a carotid ultrasound study. The hemodynamic effects of subclavian artery occlusive disease proximal to the vertebral and carotid artery origins will be discussed. Recognizing the subtle spectral waveform changes that occur with varying degrees of vertebral steal will be reviewed, including a rare case of innominate artery steal. The symptoms and treatment of vertebral disease will be mentioned.
