Vascular Risk Assessment

Bonnie Heckel.
Approximately 12% of the adult population has peripheral artery disease (PAD) and of those patients with PAD, approximately 40-60% have evidence of cardiovascular (CV) or cerebrovascular disease or both. There is a 3-4 times higher all-cause mortality in patients with PAD than in those without; therefore, the diagnosis of PAD should not be overlooked. Risk factor modification can not only decrease CV risk but has also been shown to increase pain-free and total walking distance. All patients with lower extremity PAD should achieve risk reduction and specific treatment targets comparable to individuals with established coronary artery disease. Vascular risk assessment, treatment and case studies will be discussed.
